Thomas emigrated from Ireland in the late 1840s with his parents, William and Mary, and several siblings. After several years in Connecticut, the Maroneys and their growing family settled in what is now Highland Park. William worked on the railroad. By 1860, Thomas joined the ranks of rail workers.

Thomas enlisted on August 9, 1862, joining the newly organized 89th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Company C. The regiment was dubbed the “Railway Regiment” due to the high number of rail way workers in the ranks and railroad companies’ involvement in filling those ranks. According to the Illinois Civil War Muster and Descriptive Rolls, 22-year-old laborer Thomas Marona was 5 foot 6 inches with brown hair and blue eyes. His marital status was single.
On June 22, 1864, Thomas was wounded near Kolb’s Farm near Kennesaw Mountain. His left arm was amputated. Thomas died in “Hospital No. 2” on July 30, 1864 from his June battle wounds. He is buried in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
