Map shows the Highland park Woodlands: the area between Western and Priscilla (east-west) and Euclid and Burchell (north-south). There are drawings of proposed houses in the area as well as restrictions on the lots. The map was drawn by M.B. Schaeffer, June 20, 1936.

This is a map of Lake County, Illinois by George Hale, county surveyor and J.N.Truesdell, clerk of the circuit court, published by L. Gast Bros. and Co., St. Louis. The map is from actual surveys and other authentic sources. The map shows Lake County in 1861. The map includes historical statistics of Lake County dating back to 1834. It also includes an illustration of the Public Square in Waukegan, a Table of Distances and a table of Statistics. There are also several insets: Waukegan, Antioch, Half Day, Millburn, Wauconda Central Part of Lake Forest, Hainesville, Long Grove, Lake Zurich, Libertyville, Deerfield Village, Forksville, Diamond Lake, O'Plain Bridge, and Barrington. There is a note at the bottom of the page: "Copied to preserve historical record in the office of R.M. Lobdell, County Superintendent of Highways, March 1948, by order of the Board of Supervisors of Lake Co., Guy L. Grinnell, Chairman, from old map furnished by the Lake County Historical Society, Bess Dunn, Secretary by R.M.Brown."

MARIA TALLCHIEF BECAME THE FIRST NATIVE AMERICAN WOMAN TO RISE THROUGH THE RANKS AND BECOME PRIMA BALLERINA WITH THE NEW YORK CITY BALLET. HER JOURNEY BEGAN IN FAIRFAX, OKLAHOMA WHERE SHE GREW UP ON THE OSAGE NATION RESERVATION. RECOGNIZING HER EARLY TALENTS AND GIFTS AS A DANCER, HER PARENTS RELOCATED TO LOS ANGELES IN HOPES OF PROVIDING MARIA AND HER SISTER MARJORIE WITH ADVANCED BALLET TRAINING. AT 17, MARIA MOVED TO NEW YORK CITY TO PURSUE HER DREAM OF DANCING PROFESSIONALLY. DESPITE SUGGESTIONS TO CHANGE HER NAME, MARIA REFUSED; INSTEAD, SHE MADE "TALL CHIEF" ONE WORD AND PROUDLY KEPT HER LAST NAME THROUGHOUT HER CAREER.

EARLY IN HER CAREER, MARIA WAS SELECTED TO JOIN THE CORPS DE BALLET WITH THE FAMED BALLET RUSSE DE MONTE CARLO, WHERE SHE MET AND LATER MARRIED CHOREOGRAPHER GEORGE BALANCHINE. GEORGE COFOUNDED THE NEW YORK CITY BALLET WHERE HE CHOREOGRAPHED THE SIGNATURE ROLE IN THE FIREBIRD FOR HIS MUSE, MARIA; HER PERFORMANCE ESTABLISHED MARIA HELPED REIGNITE MARIA AS A PRIMA BALLERINA. INTEREST IN AMERICAN BALLET IN HER ROLE AS THE SUGAR PLUM FAIRY IN THE NUTCRACKER.

AMONG HER ILLUSTRIOUS CREDITS ARE BEING THE FIRST AMERICAN TO DANCE WITH THE PARIS OPERA BALLET AND MOSCOW'S BOLSHOI THEATER. SHE PERFORMED AT THE LYRIC OPERA OF CHICAGO, AND AFTER RETIREMENT WAS APPOINTED BALLET DIRECTOR AT LYRIC WHERE SHE TAUGHT THE BALANCHINE TECHNIQUE. IN 1974, SHE AND HER SISTER FOUNDED THE CHICAGO CITY BALLET, A BALLET SCHOOL AND DANCE COMPANY, WHICH BECAME THE RESIDENT BALLET COMPANY FOR LYRIC. THROUGHOUT HER CAREER, MARIA BROKE THROUGH BARRIERS AS A NATIVE AMERICAN BALLERINA. SHE IS AN INDUCTEE IN THE NATIONAL WOMEN'S HALL OF FAME, ONE OF THE FIRST INDUCTEES IN THE NATIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN HALL OF FAME AND WAS AWARDED THE NATIONAL MEDAL OF ARTS. SHE IS FEATURED IN THE US AMERICAN WOMEN QUARTERS PROGRAM AND APPEARS ON A COIN BEARING HER LIKENESS AND OSAGE NAME ([symbols]) WHICH MEANS "TWO STANDARDS." MARIA TALLCHIEF'S LIFETIME DEDICATION AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO BALLET CONTINUE TO INSPIRE AND IMPACT THE DANCE WORLD.

This collection documents the Metzel family from the Civil War era 1860s through the 1960s. Its contents include a family history, landscape architecture blueprints by celebrated landscape architect, O.C. Simonds, contracts, and images.

A.J. Metzel and his family moved to Highland Park, Illinois in 1912 and developed an elaborately landscaped estate. This collection holds hand-colored images or the estate. The family owned the Cutler Shoe Company in Chicago from 1885-1937. A.J.’s son, Truman became the sole owner of the company in 1929 when his father died. The collection includes a family history written by Truman Thwing Metzel that spans from ca.1860-1960.
